Designing Totems
for a Campsite
Delve into our meticulous totem selection process and rigorous testing, ensuring these digital pillars seamlessly integrate with the unique dynamics of displacement scenarios. Discover how these technologies lay the foundation for a resilient and supportive community, offering a glimpse into the transformative power of Agorà.
A Communal
Meeting Point
While all victims would have the opportunity both to participate in the initiatives, but also to propose new ones, a series of totems will be placed around the campsite. The totems will work as community meeting point and at the same time allows people without a smartphone to use the service. All initiatives must be started at a totem, providing the initiative creator with a check-in system to keep track of the attendees.
Tap to Login
Making the interaction with the totem seamless for any user, each user will be recognized by the kiosk through a personal NFC-tag. The tag will be given as a part of the onboarding process, either by activating the NFC on their smartphone or through a vending system in front of the kiosk, releasing a new tag when requested.
Besides from signing in with the NFC-tag, the users will be asked to use the tag during the checkin-time in the beginning of each activity, letting the activity proposer count their presence."

Choreography Map
The service is built through several user flows. The flows consist of a interaction between the activity creator, the service, Protezione Civile, and the participating users. The service is designed with the user in focus, providing a meaningful experience when interacting with the kiosk or application.

Risk Assessment
When every initiative is posted in Agorá, they will follow a path of assessment before being published to the system. This is an added step to the system to assure the safety of all users together with the validity of the created initiatives.
From the user profile an initiative can be created by filling in a name and description of the activity, together with a meeting time and a dedicated kiosk for the meeting point. Along with this, the activity creator can add tags to the activity based of the kind of activity or skills that are needed to participate.
The proposed activity will then be sent to the Protezivile Civile to be read through and approved within the safety guidelines*.
This is to avoid activities proposed in a risky location or a participation in a hazardous activity without the right qualifications.During the approval process the user will be notified on the status of the initiative; pending, not approved and approved/active.Once an initiative is approved, the initiative will be published in Agorá for all users to see and participate.
Matching Algorithm
During the onboarding, the user profile will be given tags, based on the user's occupation, skills, and hobbies. These tags will be used for the service to find and suggest created initiatives with similar tags as the user.
Similar initiatives will be shown as suggested in the given user’s profile. This makes Agorà a more tailored experience, making it easy for users to find initiatives that will be of their interest.

Exploring Shapes & Opportunities

The double screen idea would provide a more private interaction where the lower screen would function as a touch screen in interplay with the larger display. This idea served as an encounter for the difficulty some users have with totem like screens
DOUBLE SCREEN

The initial idea aimed to make the totem as welcoming for the users as possible.
The table would invite users to sit down and create initiatives using a multitouch surface.
TABLE SHAPE

Thinking about the physical practicalities of having a totem in the campsite. With the foldable roof, the screen could be protected from weather and easy to transport for a new campsite.

Totem Final Design
The totem has been designed to be accessible to as many people as possible, both in terms of interface and ergonomics. Its simple shape follows the lines of conventional totems but, in addition, it can be adjusted in height and tilt.
The colors, taken from the service's branding, facilitate its identification. Inside, a token dispenser has been set up to allow new users to receive it immediately after completing onboarding. The unique name on each totem increases its recognizability in relation to its position in the field, helping the user orient themselves and find the totem where they can check-in more easily.
